Reality Check

Tonight when we arrived at the hospital the nurse had some very good news - Brooklyn is now able to take all of her feedings by bottle, and if she continues finishing them as she has been, she should be able to come home early -mid next week.  At that moment a wave of emotions swept over me.  I am thrilled that we will soon be bringing our baby girl home, but at the same time I am nervous, anxious, and under prepared (yes, I know that is hard to believe).  I cannot wait to have her home and to hold her without any wires or tubes, but at the same time those are the very things that have given me comfort for 43 days.  I was able to feed Brooklyn twice and she took 60 mL both times.  I fed Tayden once and he took around 20 mL and then fell asleep.  Brooklyn now weights 5 lbs. 7 oz. and Tayden weighs 6 lbs. 3 oz.  Tim and I were able to give Brooklyn her bath and then the nurse and I bathed Tayden.  This was the most hands-on I have been in one night and it was extremely overwhelming.  The feeding part is stressful because we have to pace them and make sure they are swallowing and breathing.  The bathing part terrifies me because they are so very small and slippery and we have to make sure they do not get too cold.  Up until this point my main duties as a mom have been driving an hour roundtrip to the hospital and holding my babies.  It has been emotionally draining, but not so much physically draining.  That is all about to change and I know that we will definitely have our hands full.  We are so blessed to have such great families and friends that have been and will continue to encourage us and help us through this journey.  We are so excited!!!!

Here are some pictures of the nursery.  I still need to add some stuff to the walls and the shelves, but for the most part it is finished.  Tim spent many hours painting and putting together furniture so that everything would be just right for the twins.  He is such a great daddy and I am so fortunate to have him as my partner in this whole experience.

Oh how my heart goes out to ya'll! We were so nervous to take Brayden home without monitors, and nurses by our side, but really excited also to show him his real home. It can be a little scary at first when you bring them home, but you will do fine. Just remember the things that they teach you, be calm, and remember that you are instinctly programed to be parents and do what is right for your babies! We kept Brayden at the foot of our bed in a bassinet until he was 5 weeks old-that is when the pedi told us he could sleep in his crib. We constantly checked him in the bassinet-and crib too-to make sure that he was still breathing. But you soon become relaxed and realize that they are going to be ok, and you too. If there is anything at ALL that I can help with, please let me know. Can't wait to see your precious ones!!! Prayers and kisses.
